Einsberg, Daniel. “Eyeing the Competition.” TIME. 14 Mar. 1999.
This article gives different examples of competition companies stealing information. Includes important measures which the FBI, companies and lawyers are taking to try and prevent competitive stealing.
This article is helpful to my paper because it allowed me to be able to give current examples of cases and active law suits against individuals, as well as companies, about competition disputes. It includes some interesting statistics about the FBI and how much is actually ‘stolen’ from United States corporations.
Forelle, Charles. “Ivy Imbroglio: Princeton Admits It Spied on Yale Admissions Site.” The Wall Street
Journal. 26 July 2002.
Report on Princeton University’s dean and director of admissions Stephen LeMenager accessing confidential information about their rival school, Yale University. The article discusses the procedures that were taking after Princeton admitted the intrusion and invasion of privacy.
This article is helpful in my paper because it is a prime example of accessing confidential information not only about Yale University but also about the students whose applications were studied. It helps make you realize that even if you think something is confidential there could possibly someone out there who can use it against you.
658.302H833v2006. Howard, Gillian. Vetting and Monitoring Employees, A Guide for HR Practitioners.
Burlington: Gower, 2006.
This book explains the laws and regulations regarding employers’ rights to monitor emails, phone class, etc. It discusses specific parts of the laws that allow employers’ and/or employees’ to do certain things that are considered legal. It points out some of the common mistakes and misunderstanding people perceive from the regulation laws of the workplace.
This book is useful in my paper because it is my main source of information about telephone monitoring and the regulations that go along with it. It includes some of the ways in which phone calls that have been recorded are later used. Also, it helps with my plan of solving some of the trust issues within companies.
Nord, G. Daryl, Tipton F. McCubbins and Jeretta Horn Nord. “E-Monitoring in the Workplace: PRIVACY,
LEGISLATION, AND SURVEILLANCE SOFTWARE.” Communications of the ACM. 15.8.
(2006): 73-77.
This article gives interesting and useful statistics companies throughout the world monitoring their employees and the ways in which they do so. Also, included are statistics about what the employers are monitoring from computers and how the monitoring has increased in the past six years. There is a list of the different types of surveillance capabilities of monitoring software in the world today.
This article is useful for my paper to help me show how certain techniques have increased and become more strict over the years. Also, the statistics will help get the point across and show people how it really affects many companies throughout the United States.
ProQuest. “Spying on employees banned.” ProQuest. 75.10. (2005): 1.
This article defines and discusses The Workplace Surveillance Act of 2005. It explains the means of the law and places it extends to as well. It briefly talks about the act in which it replaced.
This article is useful in my paper because I used it in trying to come up with a logical way to decide what terms and conditions should apply for surveillance of employees’. It is useful also because of the details and discussion it goes into about The Workplace Surveillance Act of 2005.
Sherman, Marc A. “Webmail at Work: The Case for Protection Against Employer Monitoring.”
This document gives some of the primary reasons why employers’ choose to monitor their employees’. It goes in depth about the resources and information about their company that they are trying to protect from outsiders. It explains some of the problems that can be caused if certain confidential information gets in to the hands of the wrong person, or a competitor. Also, included is some of the software that companies use in order to monitor and keep track of the activities of their employees’, especially on PC’s.
This document is useful in my paper because it helps me to explain more in detail the reasons why companies feel the need to monitor their employees’ communications so much. Also, it helped me get a better understanding and made me able to explain a little about The Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
Swartz, Nikki. “Companies Spying on Employees.” ProQuest. 41.1. (2007): 1.
This article consist strictly of statistics about what companies monitor, track content sent by and received by an employee, or retain and review all e-mails.
This article helps my introduction entice people by giving some statistics on a survey that was conducted just two years ago and expressed some percentages about Internet and e-mail monitoring.
Yoon, Suh-kyung. “I’ve got my eye on you.” ProQuest:Far Eastern Economic Review. 164.19. (2001): 1.
This review explains a little about the surveillance issues in Hong Kong and how some of the things those employers’ can do to invade your privacy is illegal for police or any government official. It also talks a little about Hong Kong’s Personal Data Privacy Ordinance, which is where they draw some boundaries as to what employers’ can get in to.
This article helps me compare the difference between the restrictions on employee monitoring in the United States verses the restrictions in Hong Kong. For example, in Hong Kong employers are allowed to monitor and invade their employees’ privacy more than the police legally can.

Research Plan
I’m using a variety of articles from magazines and newspapers in order to bring to the publics’ attention some of the ways in which competing businesses throughout the world try to “steal” their competitors’ confidential information. The articles that I have used in my research all contain different statistics and recent incidents from all over the world. Some of the articles I have reviewed consist of legal actions that competing companies act upon even though they are extremely unethical.
Problem:
• Companies tailing competitor employees
o Companies hire secret people to dig through some employees trash cans outside of their homes in order to get customer lists, policies, benefits, etc. about their competition.
Source: “Snoops” Business Week from October 9, 2006
• Making phone calls and expressing a false identity
o Companies make phone calls to employees or customers of their competition to try to squeezing some useful information out of them.
• Reading through e-mails or other confidential documents and/or employees taking this information with them
o In some cases, past employees take very confidential and important information with them when they leave one job for another job in the same field.
Source: 45% of Employees Take Data When They Change Jobs www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_pwwi/is_200705/ai_n19162742/print
o An instance at Yale University where an associate dean and director of admissions, Stephen LeMenager, was accessing confidential Internet records to see whether its rival had admitted or rejected students who had applied to both schools.
Source: Ivy imbroglio: Princeton Admits It Spied on Yale Admissions Site
• Filtering organizations or businesses
• Video taping workers without their permission
o Recently cell phones with camera capabilities are becoming a problem and being banned from some places of work for protective reasons.
Source: “The dim view of camera phones” in the Indianapolis Star on August 15, 2004
Solution:
• Inform as many people as possible about the risk within competing businesses
• Warn people about some of the things companies might try to pull on them in order to get important information from them, in sneaky ways
• In order to stop “spies” from finding any useful information in employees or company trash every company should have a policy where they have to shred everything before it leaves the building
o Also, delete all information from computers once it’s no longer needed
• Monitor all employee interactions with other businesses whether a competing company or a vendor
o Keep good records of all employees’ computers and emails
I have researched this topic thoroughly because I want to make myself more aware of the lengths that people will go to in order to ‘beat out’ the competition. Also, want to make other people aware of these tactics in case they haven’t heard of any of the cases I have presented.

The Areas of My Expertise
My research purposal paper will explain a little on the subject of competitive companies using sneaking techniques such as dumpster diving, stealing customer list, or luring past or current employees, in order to find out what their 'rivals' are up to. I will talk about some of the ways in which companies do this and also the way they get caught in the process. I will give the reader a little insight on some current situations that have come about between competing companies.
I choose to write my paper on this topic because one of my friends was telling me about how she learned all about it in one of her management classes and I think it is very interesting. Therefore, I decided that I wanted to research it more thoroughly. It's interesting to learn that many of the techniques companies are using to steal confidential information from their competitors is legal because in every case the means and action that they go through are extremely unethical.
By researching this topic and writing a paper that could be published in a newsletter I want to open the eyes of people who don't really know what all goes on between competing companies. I have just recently been introduced to some of the means and details of what happens and I would like to inform a few more people on the ways in which this happens and the consequences it has. Also, by giving example and stories on recent incidents I hope to warn people about some of the risk and some of the tricks competitors of a company will go to get want they want.

Common Sense response
In the pamphlet "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine he argues for American independence. He mainly focuses and criticizes the government, which he describes as "an institution whose sole purpose is to protect us from our own vices." He attacks the British government as well by expressing that it is too complex and that the monarchy as too much power.
In one part of the pamphlet Paine gives the reader an example of a group of people gathered on a secluded part of the earth that is disconnected to the rest of the world. He makes the point that they will be representing themselves. He explains that each person will be trying to figure things out for themselves but will eventually turn to the other people for help once they realize it is too overwhelming and so much work. He expresses that he feels people would be much happier if they were responsible for creating their own. Also, he thinks this would be better for the American colonists. He makes this point about the people stranded on an island by themselves they would create their own lives because he feels that the natural state of man is to live without government. He explains that the government is there in order to solve or prevent problems, but what happens when the government itself is the cause of a problem.
Paine later goes on to talk about how the American colonies have little to gain from staying attached to Britain. He goes on to talk about how even though we have been under the impression that Britain was protecting us, she was actually protecting herself. He also states that if the colonies remain attached to Britain that the problems that have come about in the past will more that likely appear again. From this pamphlet it is obvious to the reader that he is strongly arguing that now is the time to break off and become independent. He thinks that the present time is the perfect time to break free because of the size of the colonies and thier capabilities.
In conclusion, I think Thomas Paine makes some good arguments in this pamphlet. The points and subjects that he addresses makes you think. For example, the part about the people stranded on an island, you wouldn't really think about it from the perspective that he does. He strongly expresses how he feels about the British government and the reason he thinks the colonies would be better off apart from them.

Spring Break
My Spring Break was very relaxing and cheap. I spent the week at home with my family and friends. I loved the fact that I got to sleep in everyday. I went back to my high school to turn in some scholarship papers and visit some of my teachers. I was able to hang out with some people that I went to high school with. Then, my sister came home on Tuesday, so I got to spend some time with her. On Thursday her and I went to Evansville to visit my grandparents because we aren't going to be able to spend Easter with them like usual. I got to go shopping a few days throughout the week too, but I didn't spend too much money. I was sad to come back because it was a nice week to have no stress, but then I was ready to come back to finish the semester finished. Hope everyone else had a good break too!

Undersea Cables
These cables are supported by Telekom. Other countries would want to cut them for various reasons such as; personal vendetta against us, they are trying to disable our means of communications, or just by accident maybe. On the internet there are a number of maps that show the location of these cables in order to try to prevent any accidents from happening. Also, Wikipedia has a list of international submarines communications cables. Make them pay for the damages and repairs plus make them reimburse the profit they would make from there delivery. The UN government would have to implement it and go through with all the penalties. It is cost-effective because no one is going to want to pay all the money, therefore, they will hopefully be more careful when it comes to undersea cables. It helps everyone throughout the whole world because it is definitely one of the most useful means of communication and technology. The people it would hurt would be the ones who cut it either on purpose or by accident. It could also hurt the tax payers if they were forced to contribute money to the damages or obviously if their taxes were raised in order to compensate for the damages.

Anda's Comic Response
The comic version of Anda's game is similar to the original version, with the exception that the comic version includes pictures. The pictures make it a lot easier for the reader to follow along and keep track of what is happening in the game. The comic version like the original version follows Anda's life on a day to day basis of how she got started playing the game and explaining a little about the game. The comic version doesn't have as many words that try to explain the game, but the pictures are much easier to understand than all the words in the original version. Also, with the comic version when Anda and Lucy are talking to each other or to other players, even if they talk in the "gamer" language, it is clearer to the reader what they are saying because of the pictures and words in bubbles. This is especially true in the end when Raymond is talking to Anda about the girls in Tijuana. When he is telling her about the specific details about the young girls and the condition in which they are forced to work under it seems like it hits the reader a little harder than the original version. It seems more real when he explains that the girls in Tijuana are either prostitutes or the lucky ones are paid one dollar a day to play this game. It is really sad that the girls who play the game are considered the lucky ones considering the condition and circumstances.

Anda's Game Response
Anda's Game was very different from the stories that I usually read. It was a little off subject for me because I don't really play video games and this one sounds weird. Also, certain parts and the language of the story are confusing to readers who aren't involved with the game. It's sad to read about how it literally takes over some peoples lives to where that's all they do everyday. In particular, the main subject of this story, Anda is described as extremely obese. Also, it's dissapointing that she feels like the activity she gets in PE classes at school is a enough exercise for her. She obviously feels insecure about her body but doesn't try to do anything about it until she is forced to.
I thinks it interesting how much time and effort the players of this game put into it. For example, The Lizanator says that she spends four to six hours nearly every day playing. Also, it's interesting that the girls that play don't let people know that they are girls, they even have their character set as a boy. They do this because it was an "instant perv-magnet." However, some of the boys would have girl characters with features of their idea of a perfect girl.
This articles does a good job of describing the amount and type of violence that occurs in this game. This is a perfect example for the American citizen that argue about the violence displayed to children through video games. Also, it give some details, even though as the reader we aren't sure if they are true at first, about the young kids in sweatshops who are losing their dollar a day for their food when they are killed in the game. I do not support this game at all. It is very violent and it can hurt the poor child that forced to play it for food.

What got me here by Robert Jackson
I enjoyed reading Rob's essay because he is very sincere when he explains how being in the Navy has changed his life so far and what he hopes it will do for him in the future. I like how he stresses that demanding work provides self-worth and gratification. I can't think of a time when I have read something that actually mentioned the good things you get out of a demanding job, usually you hear about why it's so demanding and the negative affects your life. I also like how he goes on in the second paragraph to say a little about what he thinks would be the greatest responsibility he could ever for take. This essay makes me believe that he would be an excellent boss and/or employee at the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant. I like how he talks about what he wants to achieve by becoming United States Naval Submarine and how he wants to take the steps to achieve it.
I think this essay would be valuable to anyone thinking about joining any kind of U.S. forces because they can see some of the positive effects it has on someone that has experienced it. I was very impressed by this blog because it sends a very positive message to people who read it. The only thing I would adjust would be to elaborate a little bit more about what he does in his current position of a prototype instructor, a watch stander and a mentor. Also, he might want to tell the reader exactly why he joined the Navy in the first place.

Gawker Review (essay 2)
The Gawker blog puts a creative spin on the everyday media that we as Americans are exposed to and it uses catchy headlines to draw the readers’ attention. For those Americans who read the newspaper, latest magazines and watch the news on a daily basis this website adds a nice twist to the normal articles. All the people that post on the blog site are amateur authors; therefore, they aren’t necessarily the most creditable writers. However, this doesn’t have an effect on the number of people who view the site. The wide variety of authors who post their writings on the Gawker blog, take some ordinary news articles that aren’t necessarily top news stories and spice them up with their own touch of humor.
The main subject of this blog is media gossip. All the posted items are designed to make fun of either a previous article that has been written by a professional author or ridiculous acquisitions that people have publicly made. They all start with intriguing and sometimes profane titles that definitely grab the readers’ attention. I think one of the purposes of this blog site is to humor the public. With some of the articles there are humorous pictures or videos that are eye catching as well. The main audience for these articles is teenagers to middle-aged adults who enjoy reading newspapers and media magazines. It attracts teens because there are quite a few stories about some of the latest and greatest celebrities.
This site is set up in its own original format. At the top there are a few subjects you can choose from if you are looking for something in particular, such as Tom Cruise, media, gossip, pop culture, and publicity stunts. Also, above every article title there is a category name so you know what it falls under. Below each individual article is a display of the time and day it was posted and who posted it. Under that it says how many other people have viewed the post and it gives a link you can click to read some comments the viewers have written. It is humorous to read the entertaining comments, ideas or even questions that viewers have written. There are a couple Louis Vuitton ads on the top and side. Also, on the left side there is a complete list of the ‘Gawker Team,’ consisting of the managing editor, media reporters and four of the top bloggers. All of their email addresses are listed as well so you can send them suggestions or comments on their work. There is also a link called tip your editor.
Gawker is updated constantly by a lot of different people, most of who have previously posted on it. On the title bar of the Gawker site there is an update of when the last item was posted and how many items have been posted within the last 24 hours, which I have seen hit as high as 70 and as low as 4. I’ve noticed that throughout the week is when there seems to be the most new posts.
In conclusion, this blog site, although created by amateur authors, is already very popular among media gurus but is still on the rise. It shows other ordinary citizens’ views and opinions on professional media articles and/or celebrities by looking at things from a different perspective while adding humor. Also, it contains articles that don’t ever make it to the public media but most people hear about from other sites on the internet. For example, Chris Crocker the man who publicly defended Britney Spears on YouTube has recently made a new video which has been posted on Gawker with a story to follow. For all of you who like to read news and celebrity bashing articles this is a good blog site to check out.

Me vs. the World
Many people like to write their own opinions and beliefs about certain issues, however, only few can consider themselves "professional" writers. There are many barriers that can help distinguish an ordinary persons work from a professionals work. One reason I think having some barriers and boundaries on who can publicly publish writings is because some people can be very harsh, rude, prejudice, etc. in their writings and not think anything about who it will affect. Unfortunately, there are a number of ways that anyone can publicly publish pretty much anything they want. One of the main places that I have recently been introduced to where this occurs a lot is blogger.com. If you have a blogger account you can post anything you want, that doesn't necessarily mean that other people will see it, unless they know your blog account name. The blogger website is also used in school. This class is the perfect example of that, we use our own blog sites to post all of our work for grading. Some of the works we post are serious papers that are due, but also we have had to post videos that we enjoyed. This is only one of the many places people can publicly display their thoughts and opinions. The website Blogger and many more are the reasons that these boundaries are losing power.

Revisions
In every writing class that I had in high school we had to peer edit and revise every paper at least twice. I personally like to do peer editing and revisions because I think having someone else check over your work and make suggestions and then you can choose wether you like their revision ideas or want to keep your own. It might also just give you some better ideas of your own.

Facebook
Have you ever met another student in a class and wanted to get to know them better without asking them a hundred questions? By using Facebook you can find out a lot about a person from their profile page. It would be easier that asking a hundred questions, because people update their profile page constantly when they think of something else they like. Since each person creates his/her own profile page, it is a great way to find out about them. Facebook is used by many people around the world in order to “research” another person they want to get to know a little more about.
If you are a member of Facebook you can search anyone you want. Once, Facebook has found that person, you can request to add them as one of your friends that way you can talk to them. Some people have their profiles on private, which means you can’t look at anything on their page unless you are their friend. Also, some people have set their profiles to where some of their friends can only see certain things. The current members of Facebook mainly use it to keep in touch with people and to find out interesting things about people.
There is so much you can put on your profile to help people get to know you. First, you get to put a picture that everyone gets to see if they search you or if you are already their friend, they can see it when you are online. You can put your birthday, hometown, religious views and even more if you want, in the basic information part at the top of the page. Below that, you can put your contact information such as your email address, home address, AIM name, and any phone numbers. Also, you can put what activities you like, your favorite TV shows, movies, books, and quotes. There are a lot of different applications you can add to your profile too. One of the main accessories that people put on there page numerous times are pictures. You can make albums for special events or just random pictures. Unfortunately, some of the pictures people put on there get them in trouble.
Recently many companies have been investigating their current and future employees by viewing their Facebook profiles. College campuses have also been researching their students’ Facebook profiles. For instance, here at Purdue in Krannert management school, the Dean has recently hired people to research the sophomores trying to get into upper division management and the current students already in Krannert. They specifically look at pictures I think, to see what students participate in on the weekends. For these reasons and many more, if you have Facebook you need to make you profile limited, so not just anyone can see your page. Even better is not to put any pictures, saying or anything that you don’t think is appropriate for your boss to see.
In conclusion, Facebook can be very helpful if you are interested in getting to know someone. Facebook is a great way to learn some interesting facts about a person. You can find out what kind of things they are interested in and like to participate in. You can even meet new people through your friends on Facebook. It’s an easy way to make life-long friends. Facebook is one of the best ways to keep up and in touch with your friends and their lives.

Do you know Valerie Petrey? If you don't search for her on Facebook. I did and learned a lot of cool and interesting things about her. From her pictures alone I realized that she is very close with her friends and family. She has almost 200 pictures with them. It shows that she is a good and loyal friend. it also shows how much she cares about her family. She has 800 wall posts which tells me that she is very good at keeping in touch with her friends as well as some family members who may have Facebook.
Valerie's profile is very detailed and informative. I learned that she has a lot of interests. I can tell she put a lot of time and effort into creating her profile page, so people can see what she is like. She is very specific on the music she likes to listen to, she names a lot of specific artists and bands. It tells people that she listens to just about anything and she likes a variety. She also expresses all the TV shows she likes and her favorite movies. Again, she does this is very good detail. She also has some really good quotes about life and love.
In conclusion, by observing Valerie's Facebook page after adding her as a friend, I have learned so many things about her. I have been able to see how much I have in common with her. I really enjoyed looking threw all the extra settings she has added on her profile too. I think Facebook, in general, is one of the best ways to get to know someone, informally. The way Valerie has her Facebook profile organized can tell anyone who knows her, wether a little or a lot, more about her face to the world.

The way I present myself to the world is mostly reflects on my facebook page. There are so many things you can find out about a person from the things they put on their facebook profile. By putting pictures and writing on my friends walls and them relpying, people can see that I have good relationships with my friends. Also, you can see the things I'm interested in and enjoying participating in. Facebook profiles are used in a lot of ways to research people and their behaviors.
When I created my profile, I made sure that I didn't put things on it that would be embarrassing to me or my friends. On facebook there are some things that you can't change on your profile, such as the main layout. I also included my interests and educational information, that way my friends can see what I'm majoring in and the school I attend, if they don't already know. I created my facebook account so I could keep intouch with my friends from home and high school and even some of my family members.
Facebook makes me a member of the college social group, because you can find a lot of new friends that go to the same school and/or are studying the same subject you are. You can meet so many new people from all over the world. I do consider myself a part of this group because that is one of the main reason I enjoy facebook so much, is because of all the new, interesting people you can meet and become friends with. This group has made a difference in my life because I stay intouch with people I don't think I would've stayed intouch with if I didn't have facebook and I have met some people I probably never would've met.
In conclusion, I think my facebook profile can tell people more about me and my life than my dorm room, or my clothes, or my hobbies. If anything big changes in my life and can let people know but just adding it on to my profile, which is a lot easier than calling or emailing everyone. When I apply for a job or when I try to get into upper division of Krannert here at Purdue, I know for a fact that they Dean has someone look at students profile pages to get an idea about them and make sure they won't be a bad addition to the school. Personally I think you can find out what kind of a person someone really is by their facebook page. I think it is the best way to learn about someone and their interest and their life in general.
